Generating Content Through Free-Writing

Aum Amriteswaryai Namah.

Welcome to all.

Let’s begin with a technique for generating content from ideas already in our minds. It’s called Free writing or SOC (Stream of Consciousness) Writing.

Essentially, the idea is to help us get rid of our inhibitions and get our writing to flow.

We all may have faced the situation where we sat facing a blank screen or a blank piece of paper. We need to type up the required quota of words. We have the ideas inside us. But they simply don’t come out.

To understand why our knowledge does not transfer to the key board or paper, we need to look at how our brain is designed.

Our brains have a creative side (right) and a critical side (left). When we try to produce something our creative side needs to play. However the problem is that the other side (critic) also starts.

So as soon as we write a sentence, the critical side of our brain (left side) starts criticising it:
” That’s not right!
The spelling is wrong!
There is no logic in this!
It looks horrible!…”
And we stop before we start.

To bring out our ideas freely, we need to silence the critic inside us (also called the editor or the left side of the brain). Free writing is a technique to silence the critic inside our brain for a limited time.
